My
Experience with Agaton
I started
writing this article on the date of January
23, 2014. The second week of our travail with Low Pressure Agaton.
So, it's been two weeks of rain here in Butuan and the
whole CARAGA region. Not to mention all the other regions that are also
affected by the rains. But thankfully Agaton is not like his other famous
typhoons. Agaton is more rains but his winds does not blow with anger. Most of
the time he only showers us lightly. However, because of the duration of his
stay, these light rains cause floods. The only day that I remembered that he
gave out his strongest rain was on a single day last week. Was that Saturday?
Or Friday? But anyway, I don't know if in other places, Agaton is more cruel. I
can see on the internet that some Houses, near the river, the water are up to
the roof.
The light
to heavy rains though caused the water below our house to rise more than usual.
.Before the rains, the water was only
hip-high and has now reached to neck-high. Also, the water does not usually
reach to the front of the house.
Here in our barangay (Maon), we are
experiencing black out since Monday
(January 20, 2014) because one of our electricity poles fell down in the water.
I heard from one of our neigbors that went to ANECO (Agusan Del Norte Electric
Cooperative Inc.) will fix it on
Saturday. I just want to ask, why can't they do it sooner? Service is slow. Our
leaders here are slow. Barangay Pangabugan also has the same problem. We just
don't function well without lights during nights. Boredom is also killing us. I
can't even do my job through the internet. People are complaining now. No
lights, no water.
In times
of these, the government has to provide basic necessities and the most common
is food. It's usually just canned foods and kilos of rice in a bag. The
quantity depends on the barangay.
Update:
January 28, 2014
My
grown-up cousin did a surprise visit to
our house on the early evening just last Sunday for dinner. He reported to us
while on his bus ride (he came from Cagayan de Oro) that he can see the
landslides in the rural parts between our city (Butuan) and Cagayan de Oro. In
parts of Carmen, he can see them. Also, news reported that more than 40 deaths
are reported here in northern Mindanao. However, I believe that the citizens of
Butuan , the whole CARAGA region and the rest of the other regions are blessed
to have not experienced a typhoon but just a Low Pressure named Agaton.
