Childhood Review: The Kitty Bobo Show

How many of us are familiar with the Kitty Bobo Show? I just remembered this on the third week of June, actually blurting it out to my sister while we were talking about something else that was remotely different from the show. Actually, a lot of people know this show. The "Kitty Bobo Show" was created by Kevin Kaliher and written by Meghan Dunn-Kaliher for Cartoon Network back at 2001. It was one of the pilot episodes that joined the CN Summer Big Pick, where countless episodes are shown and viewers will vote what they want to turn into a series in the TV network.

The story of the pilot episode is about a young male cat named Kitty Bobo and how loves to shows-off his brand new cellphone to everybody he knows. His friends don’t have one and even the coolest cat in the neighborhood only uses the payphone. However, he doesn’t get any important calls so he just makes them up and it wasn’t long until the other characters catches up with the farce. At the end, he loses the cellphone and, much to his dismay, all of his buddies bought cellphones of their own and Kitty Bobo is no longer considered cool.

The animation was cute with a unique background of the neighborhood. Light colors were usually used and the styles of the drawings are relatively for children.
The story on the other hand can be acquainted with all age levels. The obsession of being "cool" is universal and the jokes are not exaggerated like most cartoons but it’s still very amusing.

The brainchild of this pilot episode is Korean-American Kevin Kaliher. He conceived this story while he was in Korea, looking for his birth family. Interestingly, the cat hero of the episode is brought up by dogs, this reflects own kaliher's own life that he's been adopted by American parents.

So again, the Kitty Bobo Show was featured in the Cartoon Network's Big Pick right? And the show that got the most votes will be turned into a series, remember? Unfortunately, for all the viewers who voted for KBBS, it only landed on second place. The winner was Kids Next Door (renamed Codename: KidsItalic Next Door) and it’s all about a bunch of kids who are in a war between evil adults. Clearly, KND is a show that can motivate children to rebel from their parents and degrade their brains. For crying out loud, we don’t need cartoons like that anymore.

But the story of Kitty Bobo and friends doesn't stop here. This year 2009, and by public demand, the creators of this wonderful cartoon are now working on a web series. Fans will just have to wait to see.
