Weird Al Yankovic has dedicated his
whole life composing parody songs of famous hits. Most are just nonsensical
versions although some are actually better satirically.
1.
Word Crimes (2014) ( parody of Blurred Lines, 2013)
Blurred lines is
undeniably a sexist song, like most songs today and hurtfully a lot of songs
will be made like this no matter how it may negatively affect people
(especially women) just as long as it's upbeat. However, Weird Al Yankovic,
like the good person himself, rewrote all the lyrics while still using the
upbeat tune and made the song educational and funny for English classes
everywhere. Weird Al sings about grammatical errors and corrects each one with
lyrics such as:
“I hate these word crimes/Like I could care less/That means you do care/At least a little…” and “That "be", "see",
"are", "you"/Are words, not letters?/Get it together/Use your spellchecker.”

2. Smells like Nirvana (1992) (parody of Smells like Teen Spirit, 1991)
|
Have you ever
been annoyed by rock songs with words that are unintelligible? Al probably felt
the same way and did us a favor by complaining with style.
Some fans of
Nirvana actually hated the parody because they think it mocks the song.
However, the lead singer and one of the songwriters of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain,
actually liked Al’s version. It is though, a much sunnier version compared to
the dark and depressing original. The song is laughable with lyrics like:
“What is this song all about?/Can't figure any lyrics out/How do the words to it go?/I wish you'd tell me, I don't know.…It's
un-in-tel-ligible/I just can't get it through my skull/It's hard to bargle
nawdle zouss(?)/With all these marbles in my mouth.”
The crowd
blowing kazoos is my favorite scene in the music video, and Al going demented
is probably the same way listeners feel after listening to rock n' roll.

3. Couch Potato (2003) ( parody of Lose Yourself by
Eminem, 2002)
source
He made Lose Yourself, a vulgar song about a
rapper's unhappy life and his obsession on fame to a more politically correct
song about the dangers of TV surfing.
Weird Al
sings about the crap we have on TV like reality contests that really do not
matter in our lives.
Lyrics:
"So I flip/garbage is all I'm getting…sho loves profanity/oh the
insanity…you're gonna lose mind your watchin' TV…I love shows with or without a
plot/I'll stare till my legs get numb, my eyes bloodshot, Cause I only have got
one brain to rot/I'm gonna spend my life watching Television a lot..."

4. Handy (2014) (parody of Fancy, 2014 )
Fancy is a song
about a girl who thinks highly of herself. Handy
is a song about an-all around repairman who advertises his services because
it’s what he does and it’s his livelihood. Both are in the same catchy tune yet
I’ll pick the Weird Al version over the first one. I just don’t like listening
to a girl who sings on and on how great she is.
Lyrics: “First
things first I’m a craftsman/remodeling is my only passion/ And I’m the
greatest in the business/Want referrals yo/My clientele will bear you witness/I
can help you when your door jamb sticks/There is nothing in the world I can’t
fix….”
5. Party in the CIA (2011) (Party in the USA, 2009)
Miley's song
may be upbeat but it's no different to other party songs. Weird Al's Party in the CIA still has that catchy
tune only this time; it's a political commentary on what the CIA may be really
doing.
Lyrics: “So I get my handcuffs/My cyanide pills/My
classified dossier!/ Tappin' the
phones like yeah/shreddin' the files like yeah/Memorized all the enemy spies
I've got to neutralize today/ Yeeeaaahhh, it's a party in the
CIA! /Yeeeaaahhh, it's a party in
the CIA!”
